Joel Ewusi made Crewe Alexandra history last month by becoming the club's youngest ever player and goalscorer. The 16-year-old striker achieved the feat in the Carabao Cup second round tie at Barnsley on August 25, aged just 16 years and 79 days.

His debut goal eclipsed a record held by Stevie Walters since 1988 and bettered a 70-year-old mark set by David Jones. Ewusi, who joined Crewe as an Under-13 and is in his first year as a scholar, was one of 11 homegrown players in the squad for that match. Academy Manager Aidan Callan emphasised the club's genuine commitment to youth development over publicity stunts. "Any club could field a young player in a cup competition," Callan said. "But we'd never do that. We have a long history of producing players who go on to play for our first team and beyond."

Ewusi himself was overwhelmed by the moment. "I’m so happy! Thank God and thank the coaches, everyone, all the first team management and the staff and players," he said. "When I looked at the fans and they shouted my name, I was almost going to cry."

Academy philosophy

The landmark moment arrived during the EFL's recent 'Raised in the EFL' campaign, which highlights the league's role as a powerhouse for developing young talent. Crewe's philosophy is built on providing a pathway, with the EFL supporting clubs through tools, education, and elite coaching. This approach continues to shape the current first-team squad, which sits 9th in League Two with 11 points from seven games. The team's recent form shows a resilient, unbeaten run of five consecutive draws, with the latest a 1-1 result with Shrewsbury. Their next fixture is an away trip to face Rotherham this weekend, where they will look to convert their recent draws into a victory. Fans can track the progress of Ewusi and all the squad's academy graduates on the official squad page.
