Promotion to Brentford First Team

Brentford defender Josh Stephenson has been promoted to the club’s first‑team squad for the 2026/27 season. The centre‑back, who was named Brentford Under‑21s Player of the Year for the 2025/26 campaign, will now train and compete with the senior squad over the summer.

Loan Move to Crewe Alexandra

In addition to his promotion, Stephenson will join League Two side Crewe Alexandra on a half‑season loan. The deal will see him spend the first half of the 2026/27 campaign under manager Lee Bell, providing the young defender with regular first‑team football.

Career Progression

Stephenson signed with Brentford B in November 2024 after leaving Millwall, where he had captained the club’s Under‑18s side. He made an immediate impact in west London, playing a key role in the 2024/25 season. He helped the Bees reach the Premier League Cup final and was instrumental in the semi‑final victory over Southampton, delivering a run that set up Caelan Avenell’s goal in a 2‑0 win. He also contributed to the team’s success in the Professional Development League, lifting the national title after a 3‑2 win over Bournemouth.

During the 2025/26 season, Stephenson was named captain of the B team and recorded six goals and five assists across 30 appearances. Highlights included a powerful header against former club Millwall and a long‑range strike in a 2‑1 victory over a Monaco side featuring Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati. His performances earned him the Brentford Under‑21s Player of the Year award.

Coaches’ Comments

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews praised Stephenson’s progress: “Josh was Player of the Year for the B team last season and stepped up into the first‑team space over the summer. After being involved with us during pre‑season, the next stage for him is to go and gain invaluable first‑team experience. There was plenty of interest in Josh throughout the summer, but we felt Crewe was the right opportunity for him to go and expose himself to regular first‑team action.”

Brentford B head coach Sam Saunders added: “Josh was a really big part of our B team last year, captaining the side that went on to do really well. We’re really pleased for him. He’s another player who has come through the B team and is now going to go and experience the Football League. Hopefully, he can showcase the skills we feel he has. It’s another step in his development and we wish him well.”

Future Outlook

Stephenson’s loan to Crewe Alexandra will provide him with the competitive minutes he needs to continue his development. Brentford will monitor his progress closely, with the club’s coaching staff eager to see how the young defender adapts to the rigours of League Two football.
