Crewe Alexandra maintained their unbeaten start to the League Two campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to York City. The result leaves Lee Bell's side sitting fourth in the table with eight points from four matches, just one point behind leaders Bristol Rovers.
Luke Offord gave the hosts a perfect start, powering in a header from a Calum Agius corner in the ninth minute. The early goal seemed to set Crewe on course for a third win of the season. York City responded well, however, and found an equaliser five minutes before the interval. A slick passing move involving Ollie Pearce unlocked the Crewe defence, allowing Alex Newby to slot home.
Both goalkeepers were called into action to keep the scores level. York's Tom Booth produced a string of important saves. He denied Alex Newby a second goal and later kept out efforts from Alex Hunt and Zech Medley in stoppage time. At the other end, Crewe's Alfie McNally was equally alert. He blocked a first-half effort from Reece Hutchinson and had earlier been tested by Charlie McNeill. McNally's interventions ensured Crewe's defensive record remained strong, with the team having conceded just two goals in four league games.
The second half saw chances at both ends as both teams pushed for a winner. York defender Morgan Williams made a spectacular goal-line clearance to deny Lewis Billington after his bicycle kick had been blocked earlier in the match. For Crewe, Josh March missed a golden opportunity from six yards out after a cutback from Jack Lankester. York's Ollie Pearce, who was involved in the build-up to the goal, fired over earlier in the first half. The match ended with honours even, a point that extends Crewe's recent form to two wins and two draws from their opening fixtures.
The single point reinforces Crewe Alexandra's solid early-season position. With four goals scored and only two conceded, they possess a healthy goal difference of plus two. Their current standing of fourth place is a strong platform ahead of a busy schedule, which fans can follow on our fixtures page. The team's resilience, having now taken points from losing positions, will be tested further in the coming weeks. A full breakdown of the squad's contributions is available on our stats page.
